Overview
On the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula, the Amalfi Coast joined the World Heritage List in 1997 as a cultural landscape. Positano, Amalfi and Ravello stack up almost vertical cliffs above deep green water. Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello look over the whole coast, and lemon and olive terraces underlie both the landscape and the local economy.
History
Amalfi was a powerful maritime republic in the Middle Ages alongside Pisa, Genoa and Venice, and from the 19th century it became a resort for European society.
